While mega-deals involving public companies made headlines in early 2012, the past few months have seen a significant uptick in merger-and-acquisition activity among small and middle-market firms. Recent acquisitions by local companies have helped West Michigan companies grab market share quickly and cost-effectively. Local experts expect that trend to continue as deal activity continues to move "downstream." According to John Kerschen, Managing Director, The Charter Group, “When the economy came back, the deal activity coming out of the recession was large market deals and the lower end of the market lagged. But in recent months the deal flow has moved downstream and the lower end of the market started to catch up.”
